rOS
My own flavor of Arch, daily-driven and on its way to becoming a distro.
My role
Everything.
Stack
- Arch Linux
- niri
- DankMaterialShell
- Limine
- Shell
- systemd
The problem
Not an ISO: a custom, versioned and reversible desktop layer on top of Archcraft/Arch that turns an install into rOS — with its own identity, boot, desktop and tools. The goal: a real, installable distro.
Highlights
- 01Wayland desktop with niri and DankMaterialShell (Quickshell/QML); greetd greeter; Limine boot with custom branding.
- 02ros-update: Timeshift snapshot before updating pacman, AUR and flatpak; GPU mode switching (PRIME) and automatic power profiles.
- 03Hardening: key-only SSH, ufw, zram + systemd-oomd; idempotent install and rollback scripts.
- 04GPU utilities: image upscaling (waifu2x) and automatic subtitles (faster-whisper).
What I learned
- → 01Every system change must be reversible: snapshots before updating and idempotent scripts.
- → 02Understanding boot end to end (UEFI, bootloader, initramfs, greeter) removes the fear of breaking the system.
- → 03Design is also a system: rOS’s visual identity came from the same care I put into a web interface.
