Selflix
My own "Netflix": a Jellyfin media center on my home server.
See it live · selflix.rossmel.com ↗My role
Everything: setup, configuration, secure access and maintenance.
Stack
- Jellyfin
- Docker
- Cloudflare Tunnel
- Linux
- REST API
The problem
Movies and shows scattered across folders and drives, never knowing which episode was next. Selflix organizes them into a library with posters and synopses, remembers where you left off and plays on a phone or browser, from anywhere, with personal accounts.
Highlights
- 01Jellyfin in Docker, with the library mounted read-only and the service reachable only from the server itself.
- 02Access from outside without opening ports (the server sits behind CGNAT), through a Cloudflare tunnel with HTTPS.
- 03One account per person, also created and managed through the Jellyfin API.
- 04Episode order fixed by comparing against the public TVMaze API, and posters restored with local files.
- 05External NTFS drive mounted permanently and safely on Linux.
What I learned
- → 01Folder structure is half the work: Jellyfin is only as good as the order of your files.
- → 02Elegant shortcuts can duplicate everything: symlinks made every episode show up twice.
- → 03Never expose a home service straight to the internet: a tunnel gives access from anywhere without opening the network.
